PHOTOS: Cancer survivors celebration is a big success

North Texans with cancer and their families – more than 50 participants – filled our Dallas Clubhouse on June 28 for Community is Stronger Than Cancer Day.

The event celebrated unprecedented cancer survivorship and fell on Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radner’s birthday, our original club’s namesake. Activities included a cake walk, bingo, bracelet making and an ice cream sundae bar.

Mirchelle Louis, CEO of Cancer Support Community North Texas, encouraged everyone to reach out to someone they didn’t know at the event, as we’re all part of the same community.

At the end of the event, we had a meaningful demonstration of the ripple effect – how the mental health and social support received at CSCNT has a positive ripple effect not only on the person with cancer, but also their family, friends, colleagues, healthcare providers and more. On small stones, participants wrote the name of someone who has been there with them through their experience with cancer, or a person they want to honor and remember, and threw it into the pond near the clubhouse – showing a ripple in the water that symbolizes the importance of a good support system.

Our thanks go to event partners Texas Health Dallas and Texas Oncology. Also, thanks to the volunteers who helped make the event such a success. We appreciate the donations from Adam Lyle to help cover food costs, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Raising Cane’s and Trader Joe’s.

As cancer treatment is a major financial burden, we’re thankful that our generous supporters help us provide events like these and all our services, like support groups and individual counseling, at no cost to participants.

We hope to see you next year at our annual survivors celebration!
