Texas Health Resources and Cancer Support Community expanding access to services for patients and their families

Cambridge Mindful Living Foundation leads philanthropic efforts with gift

ARLINGTON, TEXAS, Aug. 27, 2013 – Cancer affects more people than just the person diagnosed with the disease.  It also affects the family and friends of people who are living with cancer. Texas Health Resources has joined with Cancer Support Community North Texas to create one of the most comprehensive cancer care networks in North Texas.  The collaboration supports Texas Health’s  philosophy of treating the whole individual – body, mind and spirit – and recognizes the need to embrace not only the patient’s physical condition but also the emotional, spiritual, family and social impact of the illness. A generous gift from the Cambridge Mindful Living Foundation in support of the endeavor is leading fundraising efforts on behalf of cancer patients and their families. The Foundation is a philanthropic organization founded by Dallas-based healthcare real estate developer Cambridge Holdings, Inc. Cambridge chairman and CEO Jean-Claude Saada said, “Cancer Support Community’s expertise in offering essential support to cancer patients and their loved ones reinforces Texas Heath’s patient-centered philosophy and will mean the most comprehensive cancer care in North Texas. Cambridge is proud to support this important initiative.” Cancer Support Community North Texas provides information about cancer treatment and help in managing the illness and coping with emotions related to cancer. They also provide patients and families with wellness education and support for managing disruptions in work, school and family relationships. Cancer Support Community North Texas is part of a national organization encompassing a network of more than 50 local affiliates across the country with 30 years of expertise in psychological oncology. All services provided by Cancer Support Community are free and include educational presentations, support groups and networking groups, a children’s support program, social events, nutrition seminars, and workshops such as yoga, meditation and reiki as well as bereavement support. The alliance will provide patients and families who are dealing with cancer access to expanded social and emotional support services close to home. Initial plans include Cancer Support Community North Texas facilities on the campuses of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. “Our goal is to couple advanced medical treatment with compassionate, respectful care for the whole patient and for those who love and support the patient,” said Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources.  “The people of Cancer Support Community share similar values that focus on every patient as a unique individual.  We deeply appreciate the passion and dedication to serving people with cancer that members of Cancer Support Community bring to this relationship.  We are also extremely grateful for the generous financial commitment made by Cambridge in support of expanding emotional and social support for our patients.” “Cancer Support Community’s vision is to see that no one has to face cancer alone. Our plan has long been to be in communities throughout North Texas so that anyone impacted by cancer has a place to find answers, support and social interaction close to home. We are grateful to Texas Health for this opportunity to locate on their campuses and to Cambridge for their generous support of this important endeavor,” said Mirchelle Louis, CEO of Cancer Support Community North Texas. The alliance between Texas Health and Cancer Support Community is non-exclusive. Patients being treated at facilities other than Texas Health are welcome to take advantage of the services offered at all Cancer Support Community locations.  Texas Health also has relationships with other cancer support service providers.  “Our ultimate goal is to provide cancer patients with comprehensive care,” Hawthorne added.  “We will bring together like-minded organizations in an environment that fosters collaboration and encompasses the whole spectrum of needs.”   About Cancer Support Community North Texas Cancer Support Community exists to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.
