Hear from our Junior League of Dallas volunteer, DeeDee… My name is DeeDee, and I have been a volunteer for Cancer Support Community North Texas (CSCNT) since 2008. When I first began, the Clubhouse was still called Gilda’s Club, named in tribute to former Saturday Night Live cast member Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989. I was fresh out of college and a friend had mentioned that they were looking for volunteers for their kid’s camp, Camp Noogie. I admittedly didn’t know much about the organization, but was eager to get involved and see what it was all about. From the first day, I knew that this was a place with an inspiring purpose and I wanted to be a part of it’s positivity! In more recent years, I have continued giving my time to CSCNT through the Junior League of Dallas. I continue to volunteer for CSCNT year after year because of the constructive and direct impact it has on those in need of emotional and social support in dealing with the realities of cancer. Whether it is individuals with the cancer diagnosis, the family members and/or friends, this place is a fantastic support system for all. The community of members, staff, and volunteers truly care for one another and this warmth radiates throughout the Clubhouse. The opportunity to play a small part in these people’s lives is a truly rewarding experience. One of the main benefits of volunteering at CSCNT is the ability to free up the time, resources and funds of the people who work there everyday, which can then be allocated directly back to the members and programs. As a volunteer you’re tasked with a wide variety of responsibilities. From greeting members and answering phones at the front desk to addressing monthly calendars to setting up for a special events. These are daily responsibilities that must to be completed, if not by a volunteer then by the staff. Each hour I am able to cover the phones is an hour a member of the staff can allocate their time to improving the organization and support programs for those that need it most. I love Cancer Support Community North Texas and all that they provide for their members. I am so thankful that I have been able to stay involved for as long as I have with them and witness first hand the effect that they have on the lives of so many. I would encourage any person who is looking to volunteer their time to get involved with Cancer Support Community North Texas.
