Personally, I gave up making grand resolutions a few years ago. I found that by the time February arrives, some of my resolutions were already unattainable. So, instead I resolved to adopt just a few small changes – things that I felt that I could pretty confidently
accomplish! The truth is that small steps, over time, can result in really dramatic and meaningful changes – as the saying goes “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!”
We see this play out in practical terms at our clubhouses every day. People who are newly diagnosed feel completely overwhelmed (understandably) and have no idea what that next step is – after all, cancer does not come with a handbook. It is not a “one size fits all”
illness. The power of what happens at Cancer Support Community North Texas is that the newly diagnosed person and their family are instantly embraced and welcomed into a warm community of caring people. They will be encouraged to slow things down, focus on taking that next small step. They’ll hear what has worked for others and see others moving forward. They move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling more in control. They are able to take that next step and make that next decision. At CSC NT they are heard, and valued for the unique individuals they are. Never just another cancer patient.
To say that some of the changes we see are transformational is not an exaggeration. It is
wonderful to see people become hopeful again – hopeful that if others can live through the cancer experience, so can they. The program of support at CSC helps people find a way to live meaningfully and hopefully regardless of diagnosis. Most often this happens over a period of time and is accomplished by taking those next small steps.
Regardless of the time of the year or the season, it’s never too late to add a small positive change to our routine. Check out our website at CancerSupportTexas.org for all the great opportunities that are available at all our clubhouses, and take that next small step into a great 2017!
Looking forward to seeing you in the clubhouse soon!
