Advocacy and Cancer There are moments in time when a major life event can spark the motivation to make change. The need for change often arises when people experience roadblocks and frustrations while dealing with this new and sometimes unexpected event. A cancer diagnosis can in many situations cause a ripple effect that can drastically change your life and that of your loved ones. From employment concerns to insurance barriers, there are a lot of factors impacted by cancer. Some of those direct ripple effects are caused by policy and laws established by either the local, state or federal government. I believe that understanding what laws are being considered or have been enacted will help to determine how you want to advocate and voice your frustrations and experiences. Figuring out how to start the process of advocating can sometimes be a daunting and intimidating task. To help people initiate change The Cancer Policy Institute (CPI) at Cancer Support Community provides a place where people can begin to understand what is currently being debated and considered for change. “The CPI brings together patient advocates and policy experts to ensure that the voices of cancer patients and their loved ones play a central role in federal and state legislative, regulatory, and executive policy making.” On August 29th, Kristen Santiago with Cancer Support Community will be joining 2 other panelist at the Eisenmann Center in Richardson. She will be coming to speak on Federal, State and Local policies that impact cancer patients. I hope to you can join us in this free event that is open to the public.
